How to
personalize your letter:
If you’re short on time, simply copy a sample letter from
this web site. Then, after inserting your legislator’s name, and
providing your own name and address,
fax, mail, or e-mail it.
But if you have an extra minute, personalize the letter.
Inserting a sentence about your personal perspective will
add greatly to the power of your message.
Are you a parent or grandparent? A survivor or a relative of
a survivor? A concerned member of an institution in which
children have been abused? A mental health professional?
By telling a bit of your personal story, even in one
sentence, you will make your letter more memorable and
effective.
SAMPLE LETTER TO STATE LEGISLATOR (SENATOR OR
REPRESENTATIVE)
|
Dear Representative [Name] [or]
Dear Senator [Name]
I am calling your attention to an important bill that I strongly
support: The Comprehensive Protection from Childhood Sexual
Abuse Act of 2008. By eliminating outmoded statutes
that prevent victims of childhood sexual abuse from seeking
justice, this bill will make our state safer for children
and allow victims to hold perpetrators accountable for their
crimes.
For too long, we have enabled child molesters and the
institutions that harbor them to rely on legal loopholes to
evade responsibility for committing or facilitating heinous
crimes. The time has come for Massachusetts to adopt a
zero tolerance policy toward those who prey on children or
who knowingly expose children to confirmed abusers.
Passing this bill will open the courthouse doors to victims
who have historically been silenced by irrational statutes
that serve only to shield confirmed abusers and negligent
institutions.
Please fulfill your responsibility to the children of the
Commonwealth by supporting this sensible measure to
eliminate the outdated laws that have already allowed far
too many abusers to walk away from their crimes.
Thank you,
